Ceramic Petrography Laboratory

Introduction

Desert Archaeology has completed baseline geological studies in many area of the greater Southwest. Even in little known areas, ceramic petrology may be able to provide insights into issues such as ceramic production and local and regional trade. In Arizona, we have completed sand petrofacies models for many hydrological basins. Our methods are described in the links below:

Sand Petrofacies models allow us to identify complex ceramic production and distribution networks that existed in the past. As of October 2004, we have completed seven major petrofacies models in Arizona.

Currently available results from petrographic studies of drainage basins in southern Arizona are listed below. Each online exhibit includes images, maps, data tables, sand descriptions, statistical analyses and discussion of archaeological implications of the results.
