Records
Check
A records check reveals current knowledge about cultural resources in
or near a project area. This is very useful as a preliminary indicator
of cultural resources sensitivity during the due diligence process, or
for the evaluation of alternatives during the early phases of a project.
Intensive
Field Survey
Intensive field surveys identify and document evidence of past cultural
activity present on the ground surface. They result in one of two
determinations: (1) no significant cultural resources are present, and
the construction or land modification project can proceed; or, (2)
surface evidence and/or archival research suggest the presence of
cultural resources, and further evaluation utilizing more focused field
methods is recommended to determine the extent, significance, and
integrity of those resources.
Historical/Architectural
Survey
Assessments of standing structures combine methods and resources of
both historical archaeology and architecture. These specialized surveys
document the architectural styles and histories of use of the
properties through archival research and field documentation.
