William Doelle, Ph.D., who has over 30 years of professional archaeological experience, founded the company in Tucson in 1982 as the Arizona Division of the Institute of American Research, a nonprofit corporation based in California. The company grew and prospered, prompting Dr. Doelle to form Desert Archaeology, Inc., in 1989 to take on the growing number of cultural resources management contracts. At that time, the education, publication, and public programs aspects of the organization were assumed by the nonprofit Center for Desert Archaeology.

Desert Archaeology has experienced strong, steady growth since 1982. The company started with two employees and now supports 42 permanent staff members.

Desert Archaeology creatively integrates scientific research, public outreach, and legal compliance. The company began with a solid grounding in southern Arizona archaeology and has expanded from its base in Tucson to include the Greater Southwest region. We have completed large projects throughout the state of Arizona and into New Mexico. In 1999, we opened a branch office in Phoenix to better serve our clients in that area.
